Ken Goldberg, the owner of AFC Urgent Care Norwalk, formerly known as AFC Doctors Express, saw an increasing need for quality health care services that were also fast and affordable. Consequently, Goldberg left Wall Street after 23 years as a financial analyst and opened a new urgent care center in Norwalk in July 2015. The facility serves walk-in patients throughout the region, including Norwalk, Wilton, Westport, Weston, New Canaan, and Darien. AFC Urgent Care’s parent company, American Family Care, is one of the largest urgent care businesses in the United States, with 160 locations and handling more than 2 million patient visits annually, according to Goldberg. In addition, there are approximately 50 AFC Doctors Express Urgent Care locations in the Northeast, making it the largest urgent care chain in the region.
Each AFC Doctors Express location is locally owned and operated. The company pioneered the concept of urgent care more than 30 years ago, and is a leader in the field, so every clinic benefits from the aggregate experiences. The owners, doctors and staff are patients’ neighbors, the company says, “so not only will you see them when you visit our clinics, you might run into them at the grocery store, sponsoring sports teams, and at local events.”
“There are a lot of people going to hospital emergency rooms with cold and/or flu symptoms, and minor injuries, when we are ideally equipped to efficiently handle most of these situations at half the cost, and you are in and out usually within 30 or 40 minutes,” Goldberg says.
In addition to urgent care issues, AFC Urgent Care Norwalk provides physicals and vaccinations for school, sports, immigration, DOT, and pre-employment, along with occupational health services and workers’ compensation services for employers.
Patients are treated under the care of local board-certified doctors who are able to treat a variety of ailments, including viruses and infections, cold and flu, cuts and fractures, and skin issues. The facility also has its own on-site laboratory and X-ray equipment.
All the locations will soon operate under the same AFC Urgent Care banner. The same owners and staff will be present at all the AFC Doctors Express locations, and the same services and insurance plans will be offered.
“The opportunity to consolidate under one name will increase our brand awareness and patient trust; in addition, there will be additional opportunities for the entire network to benefit from its national presence,” Goldberg explains. “I’m a local guy that wanted to join up with a great company to embark on my own business, and it is extremely satisfying to be able to take care of the people in our neighborhood at the same time.”
